In November 2007, Neutone was contracted to develop a data management solution for the administrators of a the Adobe Design Awards. This competition was aimed at university and techical institutions to inspire young designers to use the Abobe tools to create the best design piece in their category, and stand a chance to win all kinds of software from Adobe for their institution.

Working in collaboration with a South African multi media company, Canadian designers and German flash developers, Neutone’s task was to develop a robust, multilingual, open source solution for the competition entrants.

Features :

The entire site, needed to be in 7 different languages, including Japanese and Korean.

Each entrant could create and manage their own profile of submissions, and uploaded submissions could reach up to 60MB , including video footage.

There needed to be an XML Flash gateway for the data, developed for the German flash developers to allow them to use a dynamic front end display showing the progress and content of the submissions to all, as they came in.

Sploosh, approached neutone with a dilemma.

Hosting images on your server can cost, so using a third party like Flickr can save clients a substantial amount on their hosting fees. Flash based galleries are simply the best tool on the web to display photos.

All kinds of Flash gallery offerings lure you with Star bursts and promotional offers, all appear insanely cheep, or indeed free.

“The touble is,” said Trevor, the Creative director. “not many of them plug in to Flickr to take advantage of Flickr’s incredible upload facilities, and image management software. The other factor is that few seem to fit the design concepts we’re after. ” Some have the ability to “re-skin”, but it just doesn’t quite fit.”

The result was a collaborative effort, developed by neutone and designed by Sploosh, that not only uses flickr as the back end, but now has a many variations of user interfaces to choose from, and we simply customize the interface according to your sites identity.
